Fontana was originally an independent label in France, but it was it's period within the Philips empire which concerns our period of time. It brought many more unusual acts to the attention of the record buying public, issuing records by artists as diverse as Johnny Mathis and The Marvelettes in the early sixties, and later on, issuing records by some acts who went on to greater things after a name change - The Who (The High Numbers), Led Zeppelin (Jimmy Page) and Slade (Ambrosia Slade) were just three. During it's most successful period, it issued records by Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick and Tich, The Spencer Davis Group, Manfred Mann, and Wayne Fontana, who contrary to public opinion took his stage name from Elvis Presley's first drummer DJ Fontana, and not the record label. The LPs and EPs were normally grey and silver whilst the singles were blue and silver. Later in the 60s an LP reissue label was created in blue (bottom picture). In late 1964 the blank LP label was replaced by the boxed version (pictures 1 and 2). In 1969 Fontana was absorbed into the Vertigo and Mercury labels. |
